Remember that free association thing?

On my way to work, this otherwise dreary, almost gothic sort of morning was brightened considerably by "Friday I'm in Love" coming up on my iPod. I had to bite my lips to keep from singing aloud.

I'm out for the weekend, going to visit my sister in San Francisco and to attend the baby shower. She was a tad bummed that no one leapt to go to the one she originally planned, but when she rescheduled, we were suddenly all available (not to mention more inclined to spend the money and time to visit since she was sooooo adorably happy that we could make it).

Also? She needs all the help she can get right now. It's T-minus one month until baby, and they still haven't come up with a name. You all might recall this little test of free association I did. I got the predictable response from fully half of you: I asked what you thought of when you thought of the word "Raiden," and most of you immediately jumped to Mortal Kombat.

The reason I made that poll? IS BECAUSE THAT IS SERIOUSLY WHAT MY BROTHER-IN-LAW WANTS TO NAME MY NEPHEW-TO-BE. My sister likes "Braden," but she jokingly said that if it's stormy when she delivers, it could be "Raiden." I leapt to conduct my scientific research so I could prove what an astonishingly bad idea that was. This weekend, I predict that we will spend much of our time continuing to dissuade them from that.

Seriously. Raiden? Even if his peers don't associate that name with Mortal Kombat (hey, the game isn't that popular now, to say nothing of five-ten-fifteen years from now), when he gets old enough to work, all the people who would hire him will be my age or older, and they will associate his name with Mortal Kombat. MUST STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING.

See you all Monday!

Vladimir Putin

I conducted a mini poll on Twitter but figured I'd get more answers here. I think this issue is a dividing one and you can interpret the words however you like, though I do mean primarily in a sexual sense. (If not your preference then imagine how you *might* vote.)

And that would be the end of that

And so endeth my Internship. Last day and all today.

At least it ended on a good note. If by "good note" one means "had very little work to do, so spent most of the day messing around on the Internet and chatting with people who came up to ask how I liked my time there. And to compliment my haircut."

(Yeah, I got my hair cut the other day. It is now... much shorter than it used to be. Possibly the shortest I have ever had it. I was going to take a picture to show you guys, but I couldn't get a decent one - as always, I Do Not Photograph Well - so no camwhoring for you.)

Anyway, back to Interning. My supervisor gave me what sounded like a decent enough write-up. And we had an ice-cream party for my last day. No, really - at afternoon tea, someone brought in ice-cream and mini cones, and we ate that. Which was very nice of them.

So now I just need to do the reflective essay, which will be easy. Huzzah!

Also: Have a meme.

Lest we forget

It's a few days late for Rememberance Day, but I just stumbled on a post by my friend, [info]thecatsamuel in which she transcribed this poem, and I thought I'd share it further with my flist since I think it's really touching and good.

It's written by Patrick Shaw-Stewart, a young classics scholar who died in France in 1917. he wrote it while serving in the Dardanelles.

I saw a man this morning
Who did not wish to die
I ask, and cannot answer,
If otherwise wish I.

Fair broke the day this morning
Against the Dardanelles ;
The breeze blew soft, the morn's cheeks
Were cold as cold sea-shells

But other shells are waiting
Across the Aegean sea,
Shrapnel and high explosive,
Shells and hells for me.

O hell of ships and cities,
Hell of men like me,
Fatal second Helen,
Why must I follow thee ?

Achilles came to Troyland
And I to Chersonese :
He turned from wrath to battle,
And I from three days' peace.

Was it so hard, Achilles,
So very hard to die ?
Thou knewest and I know not-
So much the happier I.

I will go back this morning
From Imbros over the sea ;
Stand in the trench, Achilles,
Flame-capped, and shout for me.

Good news!

So, the good news is that my wrist isn't broken! Didn't go to the doctor, but when I woke up today I had more mobility back in my hand, and it's better now than it was this morning. I have 2 opposable (and usable, if barely) thumbs again! XD
I'm thinking that there is no way I'd get that level of recovery so fast with broken bones.

In other news, I was inspired by the stupidity of online job application forms to print off some CVs and do a resume drop in the city today for Christmas work.
I had two interviews! This is awesome!
It's so much better actually getting some positive feedback rather than applying on the internet with an idiotic automatic form that asks you for multitudes of irrelevant information, only to either hear nothing back or be rejected.
For the first time in several months I feel employable.

Huzzuh! *takes a sip of G&T*

My life is pretty dull yet also highly stressful

I have been studying all this week, and will be studying all next week for my two exams on Thursday and Friday. I am really, really hoping that Melbourne will cool down to a REASONABLE temperature before then. I will settle for the 30 degree mark or just below it.

I do have [info]thirteenthgrace's birthday tomorrow night though, which should be fun. No idea what I'll be wearing yet, but considering the nature of my wardrobe I think I'll be spoilt for choice.

[info]no_pancakes is awesome. I mean all my flist is, but he has been appointed Chairman of Awesome for the week.

Back to work.

Oh, SHOW. <3

Briefly, because I'm not supposed to lj at work:

My show. How much do I love it? Even though Chris O'Donnell can't act his way out of a wet paper bag. It's okay, because he's emo and traumatised and is, in fact so traumatised that he lost the ability to make facial expressions when he was 5.

How much do I love that somone told the writers that they want a mallet-sized parcel of emo and man-pain and the writers said "Sure!" and no-one cares that if it's subtle, or believable. Because hey, emo man-pain.

It doesn't matter that the plots don't really make sense. After all, they're secondary to the man-pain, the emo mallet and the cast being pretty. I am sure that they're writing this show for the slashers. Seriously. It makes Merlin look restrained there.

Incidentally, how much do I love that they've realised that what I want in tv, what I really, really want is a silly American police procedural, with a half arssed plot, GIANT HAMMERS OF EMO, banter, explosions, buddy cops and a team of awesome? Making LL Cool J drink tea out of a wee little floral tea cup is just the icing on the cake here.

Seriously, it's like they've written this show just for me.

Q: What is guaranteed to produce helpless giggles from paramedics at midnight?

A:

[info]drakyndra

What, me post about FMA? Really?

Huh. Free time, I'd almost forgotten what that was like.

Not that I'm entirely free - I still have to study for my (one) exam, and write up my reflective essay or my internship. But classes are done, all my other assignments are done, and as of this Friday, my Internship will be done, too.

So, yeah. I actually have a bit of time to kill now. Which would be fun if it wasn't so damned hot.

So in order to take advantage of this shiny wonderful thing, today I... slept in really, really late. And [info]fa11ing_away and I went to the pool. I haven't been to the pool in ages.

While I am on that note: Happy Birthday, [info]fa11ing_away! *\o/*

For the more fannishly inclined, I am now all caught up on my FMA, both manga and new anime.

For the new anime, while I agree with the people who were somewhat disappointed at how some of the manga stuff on Ishbal was cut (there were some really, really good scenes), I'm not exactly going to raise a fuss, given it's entirely likely we may get more flashbacks later. I'm not sure how several straight episodes of flashback would mess with the stories pacing (The Ishbal stuff would really be more suited to a movie adaptation, anyway).

And as of the most recent episode... I really need a Kimblee icon. Because man, seeing him animated reminded me of what a brilliantly menacing psychotic bastard he is. Shine on, you entertainingly batshit whacko!

I also confess to being highly amused by this.

As for the manga, Oh look, chapter 101 spoilers )

...Huh. Had more to say on that chapter than I expected.

In my defense, I feel less panicked about writing now?

Holiday Update

Time for another Holiday Update :D

Tuesday was Movie World day :)
First off, I should probably mention the meeting thingy with the holiday club sales pitch person mentioned in the last entry.
Went surprisingly well. Frankly laid out that I was out of holidays due to dad being in hospital and Laura was going back to full time uni, and her reaction was basically "Right.. I'm not going to go through this pitch since it's obviously not a viable option for you. Here's a brochure with all the info for if your situation changes".
Easy peasy.

On the other hand, Movie World was a hell of a letdown.
Ten rides, five for little kids, two broken down (Wild Wild West, and Lethal Weapon broke down when Laura & I were standing at the chain-link gate about to go in), one incredibly lame (One of those "Sit in this thing that feels like it's moving and watch the video screen" ones), and two fun rides. The rest of the park was overpriced souvenier shops and a *tonne* of cafes and eateries.
The Stunt Driver show was fun, and there were a couple of other amusing things, but overall, nothing compared to Wet & Wild and Seaworld.

Last night we went along to an awesome seafood restureant and had a huge seafood platter. After which we then walked the 4ks back to the resort because... well, because we felt like it, and we kinda needed to work off all the food.

Today we were supposed to be going Snorkling and Kayaking, but unfortunately the tour company had a death in the family and so is closed for a week. Instead today was a bumming around and relaxing/recharging day, and we'll be going snorkling tomorrow (followed by Draculas!).

And now, for your viewing amusement, a couple of photos from the trip so far:

Point form because my brain is fried

- I have now finished all my essays. Ever. Which means that, assuming I pass, I'll have the (hons) part of a BA (hons).

- Cats are adorable when you give them a couple of reduced for quick sale prawns complete with the whiskery bits, legs and eyes to play with. They're just not sure what to do with them. (And yes, I know: on the one hand, prawns and, on the other, prawns reduced for quick sale and I just spent 40 minutes driving home in a madly hot car.

- I have had this stuck in my head for the last two days:

For the love of god, will someone please put me out of my misery?

- I wish to thank V for the continuing, positive and ongoing support it has made to my life over the last two weeks.

- Finally, have you all heard about this? How much do I want to go?

- There are cherries and stone fruit and (australian) grapes in the shops. This, more than the last couple of hot days mean that it's really, officially summer.

Misadventures

Oooh, it's muh birfday!
As I am a twenty-something, I deem it improper to declare how old I am.
So far today I've gotten tickets to see Aida, breakfast at the Pancake Parlor, air hockey fun, quite a large hicky, and my first ever bicycle accident ^^,

Totally my fault, and a n00b mistake at that, but it happened really, really quickly. We were cruising down Victoria Pde, about to turn into Smith St, and then whoopsidaisy! Arse over tit I went, due to slamming on the breaks a little too hard and being sent sailing over the handlebars. I was glad I was wearing granny panties sensible underwear because I was wearing a dress at the time.
The damage isn't too bad, considering. Cuts over my legs, a chipped next to front tooth and a dodgey wrist which I think is only sprained (bruising and swelling, but meh, I've had worse). The left side of my handle bars is considerably lower than the right side though, but the bike is in fine working order otherwise.

I've added a "misadventures" tag to my LJ as it seems I have quite a few of them :P

Also, declare it G & T time! XD
